'Being real'

What makes a hero is being real, truthful, and caring. A person who's almost always giving and loving. A person who tells it how it is, no matter what the sistuation is. Another thing that makes a hero is being smart, plus 95% of the time he's making good desicions. One more thing that makes a hero is being tough. He or she doesn't allways have to be tough, but the person is tough when its time to be tough.

'Like a father'

A real man is somebody that is like a father figure to young men that may not have a man in his life. A real man is somebody that is dedicated and faithful to everything they face in their own lives. A real real man is a friend, mentor and role model to everyone they come in contact with everyday. A real man tries to change or inspire a young persons' life, so they can have a promising future. A real man is somebody who believes in his self and in God. A great ATTITUDE is one thing that makes a real man beacuse If you have a terrible attitude you're not going to influence anybody. A real man have to relate his self to the person he is helping. And he needs to help because he wants too. But I'm so grateful that I have two real men in my life: My mentor Victor Scott and My Pastor Terrell D. Davis of the New Hope Baptist Church.

"A Helping Hand"

Currently in my life I have many male role models like my dad, Senator Betts, and my Uncle Loren. Each of them have many different heroic qualities like the ability to maintain a household of three boys and a wife or just running the family business. Mostly just being there for those in need of assistance. To me a hero doesn’t need luxury items like fancy cars and clothes they just need to be a good person who will help others when they need a helping hand or someone to talk to. That is a hero to me.

"No Matter What"
A real man is dedicated to his life. A real man is dedicated to his family. A real man is dedicated to God. What makes a man? Hard work, honesty, dependability, education, and self-motivation. I believe a real man is a role model for other people, and our country. A real man does not have to come from the foundation of two parents, a mother and a father. A real man does not have to have more money than Bill Gates. A real man comes from the inside of a developing adult male, who strives for success, no matter what social class he has come from, where his popularity level is in his life, and how many friends he can impress.

A real man cares about his community. He shows others that he has love for what his family has given him, or what the community has done for him. A real man is a hero to others and is successful in all things.

Why weren't more Heroes named?

Comment:
You are you missing a LOT of quality Brothers in Wichita. Some that are doing a lot in the community and for their employers. John Rolfe, Mike Kinard, Norvell Bufford and Sam Paschal come to mind. When will you start recruiting for the "second wave" of real heroes? -- Anonymous

Response:
Thanks for writing! There is no question that the 32 men we've identified as heroes represent just a sampling of the good role models in Wichita.
We started seeking nominations from the public in January, spreading the word through newspapers and radio, emails and word of mouth.Nominations were cut off in April, so that we could begin the process of background checks and producing the trading cards.
It's likely the word didn't get to everyone. And its likely that because this was the first year, people didn't yet understand what Real Men, Real Heroes is all about.
More than half of the men who were nominees chose not to become "Heroes," a designation that carries with it the commitment to undergo a background check and participation in several outreach activities with youth. In May, we will evaluate what impact the Real Men, Real Heroes Project has had on our youth, and at that time we may begin seeking nominations for a second year. -- Polly Basore, Project Manager
